Career Paths

Depending on your skills, certifications and desired level of responsibility, there are plenty of opportunities for growth and advancement in the construction industry. Build the career you've always wanted!

Journeyman after completing apprenticeship program.

1. Apprentice

During your union apprenticeship, you'll get paid to learn valuable on-the-job skills from the top craft professionals in your field. You'll also receive specialized classroom instruction for a comprehensive functioning knowledge of your chosen trade and skills that can be put to work no matter where you go.

2. Journeyperson

Those who have successfully completed their apprenticeships move on to become a journeyperson. These seasoned professionals earn a full salary, may be able to travel and often oversee the work of apprentices. Journeypeople can also become site supervisors, project managers, training center instructors or pursue other management opportunities.

3. Foreperson

A foreperson takes on more of a leadership role with their construction crew, delegating daily tasks, managing equipment and deliveries, and ensuring a project continues to run smoothly and safely.

4. Business agent/manager

Becoming a representative of your local union takes time and plenty of experience working in your trade. These roles are elected by other union members and often require long hours because these positions are dedicated to supporting and the overall betterment of the membership.

5. Owner

Entrepreneurial master craftspeople who have worked their way through other industry-related roles sometimes choose to start their own companies. These motivated self-starters have a passion for the industry and commitment to building a business, managing clients and overseeing company financials.
